An open leachate pond releases odorous compounds around the clock, and the wind delivers them to the nearest homes. Covex® floating cover seals 98% of the surface and reduces odor emissions by over 90% at the source. No structures, no anchoring, no draining the pond.
Leachate concentrates everything a landfill produces: ammonia, amines, reduced sulfur compounds and volatile organics. On an open pond, every square meter of surface is an emitter, and wind sweeping across the liquid strips those compounds off and carries them downwind. That is why complaints peak on warm, windy afternoons, and why they come from people who can't even see the landfill.

A pattern of odor complaints is what usually puts a site on the regulator's agenda. Each episode costs management time, legal attention and credibility you need for the next permit.
New cells, permit renewals and capacity increases are discussed in front of the community. An odor history is the first thing raised, and the hardest to answer with promises.
Neutralizer misting and fragrances treat the air after the odor has left the pond. They need constant dosing and energy, and the odor is back the moment the system stops.
Covex® is a modular cover of hexagonal HDPE units that float and interlock on their own. It covers 98% of the surface in a stable, permanent way thanks to its aerodynamic design, its factory-sealed water ballast and its minimal freeboard.
Our floating cover technology was tested by an independent environmental laboratory using dynamic olfactometry on side-by-side ponds of high-load organic effluent, one covered and one left open, both under still air and under forced airflow across the surface.
The reduction in odorous gases was greatest under airflow: the exact condition that carries odor from a pond to a community.
Results depend on pond geometry, coverage achieved and leachate characteristics. Every Covex® project is sized on your site data.

Assess my pond
Covex® is made of HDPE, the polymer used in landfill liners and geomembranes, with antioxidant and UV additives. Operating range from -40°C to 85°C.
Each unit carries water ballast sealed during manufacturing. Nothing is filled on site, and no unit ever takes on leachate.
Recirculation, pumping and storms change the pond level every week. The cover rises and falls with it and re-levels by itself, with no cables, anchors or tensioning.
Rainfall drains between units into the pond. No standing water on top, no rainwater pumps, no sheet sagging under its weight.
Landfills sit on open, windy terrain. Covex® XT 50 is designed for winds up to 100 km/h, thanks to its aerodynamic profile and low freeboard.
Landfills already attract birds. An open leachate pond adds a place to drink and bathe, and a way for contamination to leave the site. With 98% of the surface covered, there is no open water left, which also helps near airports.
Birds, wind or level swings on your leachate pond? Tell us about the site and we'll size a cover for it.

Typical characteristics of each technology; specific products vary. If your goal is gas capture, a sealed membrane is the right tool. If your goal is to stop odor reaching your neighbors with no operating cost, Covex® is.

Periodic visual inspection only. At the end of its life, the cover is fully recyclable.
No. Covex® reduces odor by limiting the exposed surface and keeping the wind off the liquid; it is not a gas-tight membrane. If you need to collect gas, a sealed membrane system is the right choice. If you need odor control with no operating cost and no maintenance burden, Covex® is.
HDPE has broad chemical resistance and is the standard material for landfill liners. For leachates with unusual chemistry, we review your analysis before quoting.
Covex® is best suited to storage, equalization and holding ponds. Where there are surface aerators or strong turbulence, we evaluate the layout case by case.
Units float freely around fixed equipment. During sizing we plan the access points and equipment zones your operators need to keep clear.
Covex® XT 50 is designed for winds up to 100 km/h. In strong gusts some units may stack temporarily, but floating units don't blow away and the cover re-levels by itself. Units left on the slope when the level is very low are the most exposed, so we review your operating levels as part of the study.
We recommend measuring odor before and after installation with your environmental consultant, and we help define the protocol so the comparison holds up.
Tell us the pond area and what your neighbors are telling you. A Covex® specialist will come back with a sizing and a quote for your site.
